Summer is an excellent time for enjoying a boat or caravan. After all, the weather can be great, and both of these offer quite an easy and comfortable way of enjoying it. Like many other things, however, Winter can bring this fun to an end with the weather becoming increasingly worse. While this may not be something that people who don’t own a boat or caravan have to worry about too much, it does present a few different problems for those that do.

One of the biggest challenges that presents itself is boat or caravan storage. While there are quite a considerable amount of places where you’ll be able to store them, there may still be a few things that you’ll need to worry about. This is primarily because, if not done correctly, your caravan or boat may develop a few different issues during the Winter. These will normally only present themselves once you start using them again. Because of that, there are a few different things that you take care of when it comes to either caravan or boat storage.

Storing your boat

Like many other vehicles, you’ll need to look after your boats electronics and engine. Many of us will realize this while we’re using it, but we may forget about it when it comes to storing your boat. This is something that can lead to a few different issues over the following few months. One of the more notable things you should do before putting your boat into storage is to flush out any salt water that may have made its way into your motor. This will help prolong its life as much as possible.

Prolonging your engine’s life also means looking after the boat’s battery. As such, before you use any boat storage, you should first ensure that it’s fully charged. This also means disconnecting the terminals in the battery to stop it from draining over time. It should be noted, however, that you should disconnect the negative terminal first to prevent any mistakes from being made.

When it comes to boat storage itself, there are a few different things that you’ll need to consider. The first of these is whether it will be stored indoors or outdoors. The most notable aspect of this is ensuring that your boat is stored in a cool, dry place and has an adequate degree of protection from the weather. If you’re using outdoor boat storage, then you should consider covering the boat to protect it from the elements. No matter which option you choose, you should also ensure that your boat has a certain amount of security to prevent any theft.

Storing your caravan

Caravan storage has a certain amount in common with storing a boat, although with a few key differences. The first of these is to ensure that you’ve thoroughly cleaned out the caravan before storing it. Nobody wants to come back to their caravan to months old food, after all. When you’ve done so, you should also consider giving your caravan a clean before you leave. While a certain amount of dust may build up when it’s in storage, cleaning before you leave will keep this to a minimum.

On top of this, many experts have recommended that you choose a caravan storage option that offers protection against the sun to prevent UV damage. While this may not seem significant in the short-term, it can build up over the following few months or years. This is especially true when it comes to the likes of fittings that may be exposed to the sun.

Mildew can be a significant problem, which is especially true when it comes to caravan storage. However, this can be avoided by placing some moisture absorption products around your caravan when you’re putting it in storage. The amount of these products you need may depend on the size of your caravan, but it’s recommended that you put in two or three before you leave.

Storing your car

Putting your car into storage has a considerable amount in common with boat and caravan storage. As such, much of the advice that applies to them can apply to your car. One of the more notable things you’ll need to look after is your car’s engine, as this can be something that can worsen without much use over time. This means that you’ll need to put some effort into preventing any damage to your car’s engine through the likes of rust and much more. This can be done by protecting your car from the elements as much as possible.
