A precious bottle of wine often represents a fond memory, a loved one, a crazy story, perhaps even a really bad hangover…
If you’re a wine aficionado, like us, wine storage is an important consideration for that special bottle that’s being kept for long term ageing (or a special purpose).
To keep your wine at its absolute prime, there are four essential points to remember:
The ideal temperature for wine is between 12-14 degrees, maintained at a constant all year round. Do not store wine in hot places, as heat damage often ruins the seal of the bottle, especially if it’s under cork. Any major deviation in temperature causes wine to oxidise more quickly, resulting in premature spoilage.
For wines that are sealed with a cork, ensure the storage location maintains a level of about 50% humidity- it can’t be too wet or too dry. Important to remember, that higher humidity levels will keep the cork from drying out.
Avoid storing your wine near appliances like washing machines, microwaves, clothes dryers, dishwashers, fridges and any other sources of vibration and heat. Vibration can cause a chemical imbalance in a wine.
Wine should not be subjected to excessive amounts of light. Wines store best in a dark spot, so do not store near windows, benchtops or racks that receive light.
